Short answer
No — in New Jersey a defensive driving course doesn't dismiss a ticket. An MVC-approved course takes 2 points off your record (once every 5 years, only if you have points) and by law earns at least a 5% discount on key car insurance coverages for 3 years. It doesn't reduce surcharge points.
In New Jersey, a defensive driving course won’t make a ticket go away. What it can do is take 2 points off your driving record and cut your car insurance for three years. If you’re close to a points suspension, or just want the discount, it can still be worth doing.
What the course does
The MVC’s driver programs page and the regulation behind it (N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.2) set out the rules:
- Minus 2 points from your record when you finish an MVC-approved course.
- Once every 5 years.
- Only if you have points when you finish. The reduction isn’t banked for future tickets, and points never go below zero.
- The course is voluntary.
It does not reduce surcharge points. The MVC’s surcharge page says the two-point reduction doesn’t lower a surcharge point total. A surcharge applies at 6 or more points in 3 years: $150, plus $25 for each point over six.
It doesn’t dismiss your ticket
No official New Jersey source describes the course as a way to dismiss or replace a ticket. You still need to pay the ticket or deal with it in municipal court, for example through NJMCDirect, a plea by mail or a court appearance. Some plea agreements are negotiated with the municipal prosecutor; whether one can include a course depends on the court, and we haven’t found an official rule on it.
The insurance discount
New Jersey law (N.J.S.A. 17:33B-45.1, implemented by N.J.A.C. 11:3-24) requires insurers to give a discount for completing an approved course:
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Amount | At least 5% |
| Coverages | Bodily injury liability, property damage liability, PIP and collision base premiums |
| How long | 3 years, from the next policy period after you finish |
| When it’s applied | At new business or renewal, not mid-term |
| You lose it if | You build up 4 or more points or your license is suspended |
Your insurer may ask you to apply for it. The Department of Banking and Insurance’s 2026 auto insurance guide confirms that insurers must offer the discount. Tell your insurer once you’ve finished.
Taking the course
- Approved courses only. The MVC publishes lists of approved classroom and online providers on its driver programs page.
- Online is allowed. The course must give at least six hours of instruction, with quizzes, a final exam and a live helpline (N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.5).
- Completion is reported for you. Providers must send the completion list to the MVC within 10 days.
- Cost: online courses typically cost about $20–$35. These are course providers’ published prices; check that the provider is on the MVC list.
Defensive driving vs the Driver Improvement Program
| Defensive driving course | Driver Improvement Program (DIP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Voluntary? | Yes | No — offered by MVC notice instead of a 30-day suspension at 12–14 points |
| Points removed | 2 (once every 5 years) | Up to 3 |
| Fees | Course price only | $75 MVC fee plus a class fee of up to $75 |
| Can one replace the other? | No | No |
There’s also a separate Probationary Driver Program for newer drivers convicted of two or more moving violations totalling 4 or more points.
Choose an approved course
Only a course approved by the state counts. Use the official list to pick any approved provider, online or in a classroom.
Frequently asked questions
Does a defensive driving course dismiss a ticket in New Jersey?
No official New Jersey source says it does. The MVC describes the course as a voluntary way to take 2 points off your record and qualify for an insurance discount. The ticket itself still has to be paid or dealt with in municipal court.
How often can I take defensive driving in NJ for points?
The 2-point reduction is available once every 5 years, and only if you have points on your record when you finish the course. Points are never reduced below zero.
How much is the NJ defensive driving insurance discount?
Insurers must give at least 5% off bodily injury, property damage, PIP and collision base premiums for 3 years, starting with the next policy period after you finish. You lose it if you build up 4 or more points or your license is suspended.
Can I take defensive driving instead of the Driver Improvement Program?
No. The Driver Improvement Program is a separate, mandatory program the MVC offers instead of a suspension when you reach 12 to 14 points. The MVC's FAQ says a defensive driving course can't replace it.
Can I take the NJ defensive driving course online?
Yes. Online courses are allowed if they're MVC-approved and give at least six hours of instruction. The MVC lists approved classroom and online providers.
